Rules

find art and beauty (it's everywhere).

Remember where you are.

Be respectful.

Every place has different rules.

Abide by them.

Look slowly at the beauty (or unpleasantness) of that which grabs your attention.

experience the art in a new, more interactive way.

leave the place better than the way you found it. appreciate it and remember it for the feeling it left you with.

Sometimes it's ok - even encouraged - to literally enter the art installation. Other times it is not. Read the signs.

(Photo above taken en route to Peggy's Cove. Thank you to Ivan Fraser - a storyteller, photographer, artist and author who has captured and created stories we can look at, enter and listen to. This picture was taken at his museum. (http://www.peggyofthecove.com/)

Diagnosis: Gallery fatigue.

SymptomsWalking around aimlessly, physical and emotional exhaustion, sluggish walking, early evolution posture, increasing dislike for art, claustrophobia.

Cure: Follow the advice of Tracy Chevalier:

  • do a quick walk and glance

  • return to the pieces that resonate with you

  • see if you can find a way to re-enact it..

  • if you're allowed (usually flash free) take a picture and send it our way.

Find art that makes you look again

Recreate it in some way in the moment

All you need are your facial expressions and posture, possibly a few props and a camera (if permitted where you are) to capture it.

Remember documentation can be great - but really it's the experience of bringing the art back to life in a way. You become the subject of the artists focus!
